As a former boutique owner (most of you know that...some of you may not), it is just part of my being to constantly search for the best products out there. Whether it be clothing, shoes, handbags, skin and body products, makeup....whatever, I'm always testing out products, trying different brands on...doing my best to find the best of the best! Even though I no longer go to a brick and mortar location in which my customers come to shop with me, customer service and my clients' trust in me is still a major factor of my business today. So I always want to make sure that the products I'm bringing to my clients are the best products around. There has been a section on our website called Skin Deep since we created the site, and it has said "Coming Soon"....until now! I am extremely excited to provide all of my clients with the amazing and safe skin and beauty products that Beauty Counter has to offer. I have tested the products out for a long time now, and truly love them all. As I get older, I have become much more conscious of what goes into my body as well as what I put ON my body (and the same goes with my children). It literally makes me happy to know that the products I'm using, and my children and husband are using, everyday, are completely safe and HEALTHY for your body...inside and out!
Here's a little info about this company that I have come to love so much! Their mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone is something I can absolutely stand behind 100%! The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. Over the past two decades, the European Union has banned more than 1,300 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more in such products. The United States has only partially banned 30 to date. Beauty Counter is committed to a health and safety standard that goes well beyond what’s required by U.S. law: They've banned the use of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals through their "Never List”—all while ensuring their products perform and that they’re as indulgent as any other luxe shampoo, lipstick, or oil in the market.
These products are loved by so many, and let me tell you...they sell out FAST! These Shampoo and Conditioner Collections just launched on Monday (July 17th) and they were SOLD OUT by Friday (July 21st). If you want on my list to order once they are back in stock, you better let me know ASAP...not even kidding, haha! You can visit our Skin Deep section on our website to see more of my favorite products as well as click on any of the photos to shop my site. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me, and I will get you taken care of!
And just a little peek into the future...I will be sharing another product with you soon that myself, my children, and my husband have been using for a while now, and we all LOVE! Just know, I will not be adding on any competing products so go ahead and shop to your little heart's desire all the Beauty Counter products as well as the Carlisle Fall 2017 collection you want. Stay tuned to find out more......
Whew...sorry, guys. I took a bit of a hiatus from writing on the blog...you know, life and all sort of got in the way. But, I wrote this down months ago as something I wanted to write about, and I still think it is very important so I wanted to get it out there to you. And there's really no better time than Fall for this topic since Fall clothes tend to be pricier than Spring and Summer clothes. And yes, I know it's July...not exactly Fall weather, but if you are smart you are already planning your Fall wardrobe budget and getting ideas together. Fall items are all over the shelves so it's great to get going on what you really want to spend your dollars on.
This blog post is about investing in your clothing for the right reasons. We should all have budgets that we follow, and seasonal clothing purchases should definitely be a part of our budgets. In fact, clothing (and shoes, accessories, etc) can be a pricier section in our budgets but if you purchase for the right reasons, you'll definitely benefit in more ways than one. Here are three simple reasons why your clothing should be an investment.
When you invest in your clothing, you will definitely spend more upfront; however, you will spend significantly less overall. Spending more money on each piece of clothing means you will most likely buy less pieces each season. So you are probably saying, "Well that doesn't sound like fun to me!". Actually, it is fun! This way you will become more selective of your pieces and only buy what you need rather than just a bunch of stuff to fill your closet. You build upon your wardrobe over time, and this is a really fun way to incorporate past pieces with new pieces and continuously interchange your items with each other! Investment clothes shopping is all about QUALITY over QUANTITY. This type of shopping allows you to not over indulge in the seasonal trends that are typically associated with less expensive clothes. Your pieces will mean more to you, and they will be pieces you love forever rather than just a couple of months.
Which brings us to the next topic: Investment pieces never go out of style. They might be put on the back burner for a bit of time but they will always come back in style. Fashion is a like a revolving door. It's virtually impossible to design something completely brand new. Inspiration comes from past clothing trends and past "style decades" (60s, 70s, 80s etc) among other things. And yes, if you invested and purchased a good, quality piece then it will still be in good shape to wear ten, twenty, thirty years down the road! Now, I'm not saying keep every piece of clothing you ever buy. If so, we'd all need a closet the size of a house just to store it all! You will always have to go through your closet (or hire me to do it for you...hey, nothing wrong with a personal plug!) to get rid of things that are dingy, no longer fit, or simply do not fit your lifestyle anymore; however, you will purchase investment pieces that you will never get rid of...except to maybe hand down to your daughters or granddaughters! All of your clothing can be stored to be kept fresh and clean which should be done seasonally. If you are putting something up for a while, such as a leather coat, there are ways to store the garment to keep it wearable for years on end. Investment clothing is not only the best option for you but it is also the best option for the entire fashion industry. The next topic explains why!
Have you ever heard the term fast fashion? Well you should know all about it because it truly hurts people. This topic is the one I'm really most passionate about because by supporting fast fashion, we are actually contributing to the inhumane working conditions of the factory workers making the clothing as well as the devastating effects on the environment from disposing of so many items caused by overbuying fast fashion. The definition of fast fashion is "an approach to the design, creation, and marketing of clothing fashions that emphasizes making fashion trends quickly and cheaply available to consumers" (Merriam-Webster). This means that when the trends hit the catwalks during Fashion Week, the looks are then mass produced at astonishingly low costs in order to feed the demand for cheap, low-quality, "throw-away" pieces. Top chains like H&M, Forever 21, and Zara are perfect examples of fast fashion retailers. While fast fashion is extremely profitable for these chains (Amancio Ortega, founder of Zara, is said to be the third richest person on the planet, worth around $58 billion), it is the direct cause of the situations mentioned above. In 2013, the deadliest garment-factory accident in history occurred when the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh collapsed killing 1,134 factory workers and injuring 2,500 more. The factories are paid such cheap prices for making the clothes for these chains (and many more), they are forced to work in dangerous and unhealthy factories. The factory workers have zero negotiation rights because the fast fashion chains will simply take their business somewhere else. On average a typical factory worker works 14-16 hours a day and takes home $38 a MONTH! That is insane and extremely heartbreaking. These workers cannot even support themselves on that monthly take home, let alone their children too. I am very conscious of the factories in which my clothing is made, and the standards the brand sets. Unfortunately, inexpensive clothes are inexpensive for a reason. I'm not saying that spending $250 on a top is what you have to spend but $15 for a sweater means the sweater was made for pennies, the factory worker made about $2 (and personally makes about 10-15 of these sweaters a day) for the entire day, and the CEO of the fast fashion chain is a billionaire. Personally, that is not a business I want to support. I understand that we cannot always spend top dollar for every garment (especially on our children) but I am asking that we all become a bit more mindful of the situation. Instead of buying 10 fast fashion items just because they are cheap, only buy what you will really wear. Hopefully these small changes will amount to something; however, it's always best to invest more in your clothing. Help save the factory workers, the environment and yourself time and money (overall).
Here are some of my favorite looks for Fall 2017 that are perfect investment pieces! You can keep them for years, mix and match them with different items to make several outfit options, and several can be worn season to season through layering. Click on the photo if you want to shop these items!
Christian Siriano's Fall 2017 runway show was unbelievable and his looks are out of this world; however, lets take a moment here and celebrate what Siriano did ON the runway. He celebrated ALL women. He showcased women of all sizes and that is a breath of fresh air on the catwalk scene. "I....grew up with a Mom who was a size 16, 18, so it wasn't new to me to have voluptuous woman in my life...and my sister's a size 00. I had the two total extremes, and now I see that everywhere." said Christian. He has been around body diversity his entire life so it's important to him for his clothes to fit all body types.
Christian Siriano became recognizable after he won the fourth season of Project Runway, and this is when his career as a fashion designer catapulted. Before winning Project Runway, Siriano, studied under big fashion names such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. Since winning Project Runway, he has collaborated with many lower cost brands such as Lane Bryant and even Payless. Fun fact: All of the shoes worn down the runway in Siriano's Fall Ready-to-Wear 2017 show are all from his shoe line at Payless. How great is that?!?

So we had a fun little contest on our Instagram account (@riversandrunways) and asked everyone a little riddle. What do closets need the most but most do not have? The answer to that question is in the title...NATURAL LIGHT! Natural light is SO important when putting your outfits together as it is the best way to see the true color of your items..from clothing, to handbags, to shoes and all your accessories. Every time we design a closet for a client we incorporate natural light in some way. Here are some examples:
1. Sky lights and windows. Sky lights are amazing and add some instant natural light into your closet space. Windows are an obvious option if you can spare the wall space. We usually only use windows in a closet if there is plenty of square footage for the closet so that we are not taking up valuable storage space for a window. If we cannot spare the space, then sky lights are the way to go!
2. If you have a closet that is connected to your bathroom rather than your bedroom, then try taking off the closet doors. This will allow some light from your bathroom windows to filter into your closet. When we are designing a closet for a client that is building a new home, we love this option for a closet space. We have built-ins installed inside the closet so that all of the clothes can be put behind doors but the actual closet itself is left open.
3. The third option is for our clients who love open spaces with minimal fuss. For these clients we design closets that are merely extensions of their bedrooms. So, instead of a separate closet space, we may have built-ins installed as a pass through on the way to the bathroom space. The closet is basically it's own space; just without the doors and designated walls separating it.
A very important note to keep in mind when planning in natural light in your closet space is to make sure the light is not hitting your items directly. This will cause your fabrics to fade with the sunlight.
We definitely know our stuff when it comes to designing the perfect closet! Let us work with you and your builder to design the closet of your dreams...whether you are building a new home or remodeling your current one. Contact us for more details!
New York Fashion Week for Fall 2017 is in full force but we'll get to that later. Right now, we want to give you more Spring since after all, it is right around the corner. These are the must have items for your closet this Spring, and how to wear them!
No longer are eyelashes the only thing that needs to be dramatic on you. Your pants...they need drama! From funky prints to wide legs and embroidery, dramatic pants are all the go for Spring. We prefer to pair a printed pant with a more neutral top just so you do not feel like a clown; however, you can mix prints if you dare. This can be a really fun way to look current. We absolutely LOVE all these pants above! Wear the python print with a button down denim top and loafers, the lollipop wide leg pants also looks great with a denim top for a more casual look or pair it with a matching lollipop camisole for a one piece look. We suggest the floral print pants with a black bodysuit or black leather top, and the white embroidered pants with a fitted white button down and tall strappy heels.
Floral prints will be everywhere this Spring! Everything from dresses to bras and bathing suits will be donned with feminine floral prints. We absolutely love a caftan in the Spring and Summer, and one with a floral print makes you feel like a Grecian goddess. A floral print on a party dress is the PERFECT wedding attire or outdoor party dress. If you are not in to a full body print but want in on the action, trade in your old skivvies for some pretty, floral printed ones!
Over-sized outwear is not only a great piece to have in your closet this Spring but it can also be looked upon as the BEST accessory you can have this Spring. We all know the Spring season tends to bring on those showers so these raincoats are a must have. The one above comes in two colors and has a detachable hood. Our favorite part about these is the over-sized short sleeve. Not too hot so these can easily be taken into Summer but they still give your arms coverage from the rain.
Last but not least, are embroidered dresses. This look is boho, it's casual, it's fun and most importantly, it's so easy! This embroidered dress is a simple tunic style dress with embroidered patch pockets so it does not feel overwhelming but gives a simple dress a fierce style statement. This is perfect for those Moms running to and from the school, a casual lunch with the girls or dinner out with the family. We would leave this unbelted, and pair it with some fun booties and eclectic jewelry, and you are good to go!
If you are interested in any of these looks, or need some extra Spring inspiration please do not hesitate to Contact us. We can shop all these looks for you, and get them delivered to you. No work on your part! Lets get your Spring wardobe in your closet!
A lot of us have to quite a bit of traveling around the holidays. It seems like from Thanksgiving through the New Year, we live out of suitcases, forget all about counting calories and drink as much coffee (or wine...what??) as we possibly can. When it comes to staying stylish, we totally have this in the bag. Below are 6 travel outfits that are super comfortable without sacrificing style.
As you can see, neutrals are our go to when it comes to travel style. Keeping with black, white, grey, and beige tones will help you maintain a cohesive look that is functional, comfortable and of course, stylish. You do not want a lot of fuss when it comes to accessories while traveling so we suggest keeping it light. A simple scarf to double as a little blanket when airplanes are cold, a handbag that doubles as a tote to keep your wallet and IPAD in, and sunglasses for when you need a little nap are the BEST travel accessories. Keep jewelry to a minimum as it will set off the metal alarms as well as potentially snag your sweaters with all the moving around you'll be doing. And as always, only travel with what you need. Keep it light and stress free! Contact us today if you need help with your travel wardrobe...we are happy to help!
First of all, we do not really like the word "closet". We prefer dressing room. These are not just for boutiques. Do not think of them as a cramped hole with a hook on the wall but rather, a glamorous, highly organized, perfectly functional space that houses your most sacred belongings - your shoes, clothes, handbags, jewelry and so on. If you have the extra space, you can even take your dressing room up a notch and create a mini bar or office nook in a well planned out location. This space should embody who you are, what you have, and most importantly, you should love being in it.
In order to maximize your space, every nook and cranny should be utilized. Floor to ceiling shelving and racks are a must-have. A place for your shoes, scarves and handbags should be carefully considered based upon an assessment of your inventory. This all takes keen attention to detail as well as a broad fashion sense to create the perfect dressing room for you.
At Rivers and Runways, we custom design your closet space to make it your dressing room. Everything from the cabinets and shelves to the shoe storage and lighting is all purposefully designed just for you. We can even make your own custom designed jewelry displays and trays to coincide with your dressing room design aesthetic. Whether you are building a new home or thinking of remodeling your current space, Contact us today for a FREE consultation. We'll design you the dressing room of your dreams!
As you all know (or maybe you don’t), we are two women whose business revolves around one’s image. Naturally, because we are women, we gravitate towards helping other women. Although we love our male clients too, we get more pride out of helping other women look and feel their best, get them organized in the home and office, and basically, help improve their overall image. We have been working on a blog post about young professional women but since the recent election, we felt the need to expand and reach out to all women.
Now this post is not about the election or its results but more about some behaviors we have seen during the election and after its results.
No matter what the results were of the election, it does not mean that as women, we are doomed. Sure, Trump said some awful comments about women but we are not going to let that stop us from being smart, successful women. Hillary could have been the first female President of the United States but she too, was flawed. So we are going to move on, put our 100% support behind our President for the better of our great country, and wait for the right woman to come along to be the first female President of the United States.
Here’s how you do that: FIGHT BACK. And not by holding up a sign while marching down the street or crying defeat in the camera, but by fighting back in a strong and classy way. We know that it is our right to protest; however, we are just not convinced that type of protest actually makes a difference. The type of protest that does make a difference is education. So educate yourselves. Get up every day, and work hard towards your goals. Never give up. If you are offended by what a man (or anyone) says then prove them wrong. Do not give them more ammo.
If we as women want to be treated the same as men in the workplace then we have to “be” men in the workplace. Now we know that this statement may strike some nerves but we stand behind it. Just hear us out. Lets toughen up ladies. Do not dish it out, if you cannot take it. Remember when you’re Mom told you as a child that if someone said something mean to you, you should say back to them, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”? Well, that still applies even as adults except you don’t literally say that out loud to someone but we highly recommend saying it to yourself in your head....over and over. Words are words. Sure they hurt, and yes, mean things should not be said but unfortunately, that will never change.
There will always be mean people that say and do mean things. What will set you apart is how you REACT to these situations. You can kick and scream or you can prove them wrong. We will tell you the latter is much more becoming. We actually saw a video of a lady defecating on the street and then pick it up and smear it on a Trump sign. Ewww, ewww and ewww....We can PROMISE this kind of behavior will get us women nowhere!
So please, ladies, whether you are a stay-at-home Mom or the CEO of a major corporation, you must be strong, bold and beautiful. In order to be these, we have to be educated, humble and healthy. Read as much as you can, take a walk, ENJOY your children, bond with your pets, work hard, indulge in a hobby, learn from your experiences and others, love your significant other, volunteer your time to charity, SUPPORT EACH OTHER….live your life to the fullest. Now, that is an image that all women can be proud of. Always be a fighter. Always a survivor. Who knows...maybe YOU will be the first female President of the United States of America. THAT is inspiring!
As always, if you need help improving your image, then Contact us today! What?!? We have children to feed; we are fighting back by working hard! And please, please if you do become the President of the United States, remember us. We would DIE to be your stylist!!!! We love you all! Go get em!
We wanted to share some photos of our fall photo shoot we styled a couple months back. It's becoming more and more common for us to see plus size models gracing the covers of big name magazines, and for women with curves to be celebrated across all avenues of the fashion and beauty industry. The image of the teeny weeny model is not a reality for all, and the public is demanding some diversity. And we think that's great! We celebrate all body types: straight and curvy and everything in between; however, you cannot find a ton of information on how to dress the plus size body. Well, that's what we are going to do in this blog. We'll give you some tips on what looks best, and how to pair items up to compliment your God given beauty.

1. Doncaster Drape Back Velvet Dress in Women's Sizing 2. Doncaster Tuxedo Dress in Women's Sizing 3. Doncaster Pebble Knit Capelet
4. Doncaster Python Embossed Handbag
When we are dressing a plus size client, we almost always go fitted. When you have a larger bust size or a curvy hip, then wearing a fitted dress will give you that hourglass shape that is super sexy. If this makes you a little self conscious, then add a wrap around your shoulders for some extra coverage. And we are completely in love with this look that famous plus size model, Ashley Graham, put together. Casually draping a blazer over her shoulders still allows you to see her curvy figure but gives her the extra coverage over her shoulders and arms. Perfecto!
1. Doncaster Pebble Knit Menswear Vest 2. Doncaster Lace Sleeve Blouse 3. Doncaster Stripe Jacquard Skirt 4. Doncaster Python Embossed Handbag 5. Valentino Pump
Here we have put a fitted textured skirt with an asymmetrical hemline with a fitted lace sleeve blouse. These two items together will again show off those curves that are so amazing about your figure. We paired this with a longer length menswear vest which gives the rump a little extra coverage but also sends this look into trend worthy headlines! This whole outfit suggests confidence and playfulness and those two put together exudes a strong and powerful woman.
The BIGGEST SECRET to pulling off any look beautifully is, of course, your under garments. You must go with seamless and you must go with comfort. There are lots of different brands out there that are great for both. Please, if you have not already, go get fitted professionally for you bras. This will make a huge difference just in itself. If you have not been fitted professionally, then we can pretty much promise you, you are wearing the incorrect size. We will link some under garments that we like as well as some more plus size options for your clothing!
If you need help with any of your wardrobe needs Contact us, and let us help you celebrate your curves this fall and winter season. Our clients get the inside scoop when we work with them one on one so do not hesitate to contact us. We will share all of our tips and secrets including how any seasonal trend will work on your body!
