So we had a fun little contest on our Instagram account (@riversandrunways) and asked everyone a little riddle. What do closets need the most but most do not have? The answer to that question is in the title...NATURAL LIGHT! Natural light is SO important when putting your outfits together as it is the best way to see the true color of your items..from clothing, to handbags, to shoes and all your accessories. Every time we design a closet for a client we incorporate natural light in some way. Here are some examples:
1. Sky lights and windows. Sky lights are amazing and add some instant natural light into your closet space. Windows are an obvious option if you can spare the wall space. We usually only use windows in a closet if there is plenty of square footage for the closet so that we are not taking up valuable storage space for a window. If we cannot spare the space, then sky lights are the way to go!
2. If you have a closet that is connected to your bathroom rather than your bedroom, then try taking off the closet doors. This will allow some light from your bathroom windows to filter into your closet. When we are designing a closet for a client that is building a new home, we love this option for a closet space. We have built-ins installed inside the closet so that all of the clothes can be put behind doors but the actual closet itself is left open.
3. The third option is for our clients who love open spaces with minimal fuss. For these clients we design closets that are merely extensions of their bedrooms. So, instead of a separate closet space, we may have built-ins installed as a pass through on the way to the bathroom space. The closet is basically it's own space; just without the doors and designated walls separating it.
A very important note to keep in mind when planning in natural light in your closet space is to make sure the light is not hitting your items directly. This will cause your fabrics to fade with the sunlight.
